Lamy has 2.7 hectares in the 1er Cru Les Frionnes, with vines planted in 1935, 1960 and 1985. It’s a southeast-facing site with old, decomposed limestone/clay soils and a topsoil covered in fragmented limestone. The vines are adjacent to the Derrière Chez Edouard site, but this is a slightly warmer terroir, so it’s picked earlier. Frionnes gives pulpy fruit yet vibrant, saline freshness and a compact, rocky close. As Olivier Lamy says, it’s a terroir that has “one foot in Chablis, one foot in the Côte de Beaune.” In recent years this is a terroir that has joined the ranks of Lamy’s finest.

The 2023 Saint-Aubin Les Frionnes 1er Cru comes from various aged vines within five holdings that represent 2.7 hectares. You cannot help but imagine a stormy sea coast on the nose due to its tangible salinity. The palate is very well balanced with quite an intense, almost viscous opening. This has a keen line of acidity, taut and fresh with just a touch of exoticism on the finish courtesy of that warm summer. Lovely.” 92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Larger with a very subtle reduction to some clarity of riper yellow citrus. Wow width. Then a cascade of fresh, energetic flavour, fading then holding. That’s a great 2023!!” Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report
